From a remote valley to a popular holiday destination
Until the 12th century, the Leutasch Valley was almost uninhabited – only a few hunters roamed this pristine corner of Tyrol. In 1178, the Augustinian Monastery in Upper Bavaria received land in the valley, marking the beginning of settlement in the region. Even then, the inhabitants treated nature with great respect, clearing land carefully to preserve the valley’s idyllic scenery.
Gradually, the population grew, primarily farmers who paid rent for the monastery’s land. In the 19th century, these obligations ended with the dissolution of the monastery and feudal system in Austria.
The meadows and forests once sustained daily life. Today, the valley is world-famous thanks to the writer Ludwig Ganghofer, who immortalized its history and beauty in his works. Visitors now flock to the Leutasch Valley to experience the enchanting landscapes of Tyrol.
